the Italian city of Turin wanted to deploy its accounting applications
to low-cost client devices, it decided that the solution was to
web-enable these applications. The challenge was to web-enable them
quickly, without any costly application rewrites or changes to the

A Bustling City
 Located in northern Italy, Turin is a bustling city with a population
of around one million. At the heart of day-to-day operations is
the city's financial accounting software, used by about 150 city
council employees.
The city needed to reduce the maintenance costs of each workstation,
and extend the use of the applications to more employees, who would
be using a range of client devices.
No Rewrites or Restructuring Needed
Tarantella web-enabling software, provided by CSI-Piemonte, a publicly
funded IT outsourcing agency, enabled Turin to rapidly web-enable
its accounting applications for use on heterogeneous clients, including
low-cost PCs and thin-client devices. The applications were web-enabled
without any software rewrites and without any restructuring of the
existing LAN and WAN network.
What's more, the applications are now administered and deployed
centrally from a single server. City employees can access the applications
from their PCs, laptops and even mobile devices.
