PepsiCo Snacks Argentina drops Citrix, and moves to Tarantella,
as it upgrades to a web-based architecture
PepsiCo, Inc., is one of the world’s most successful
consumer products companies with 116,000 employees, and revenues
of over $20 billion in 1999. When PepsiCo Snacks Argentina, (a division
of Frito-Lay Argentina) upgraded from a client/server model to a
web-based architecture, it chose Tarantella Enterprise II over Citrix®
MetaFrame® for application deployment.
The company had been using the Citrix product, but found that Tarantella
Enterprise II provided centralized management, better performance,
and didn’t require additional software on any of their client devices.
Tarantella Enterprise II web-enabling software is now a key component
of PepsiCo’s Latin American operations.
Moving to Thin-clients
Oracle® database applications drive the
day-to-day operations of PepsiCo’s regional offices in Argentina
and Uruguay. Around 600 employees need daily access to these applications.
To deploy them effectively, PepsiCo needed to move to a web-based,
thin-client infrastructure, and wanted to integrate all its applications
through a single client.
Significant IT Savings
The solution, Tarantella Enterprise II, enables PepsiCo to integrate
all its corporate applications and deliver them to the users through
a common interface on the users’ client devices. Tarantella Enterprise
II provides the users with access to their Oracle applications,
which reside on Windows® NT application
servers. The separate Tarantella server connects to these servers,
each of which runs a specific Oracle application, such as finance
or accounting. From the Tarantella control center, PepsiCo can distribute,
manage, and maintain these applications easily and centrally. As
a result, the company has experienced significant IT administration
and management cost savings.
Easy and Cost-effective
The Tarantella solution has delivered major benefits to PepsiCo:
Ease of management
The Oracle applications are installed and managed on the server,
not on individual users’ client devices.
Lower computing costs
The reduced need for management has cut IT costs.
Simpler administration
The Tarantella control center centralizes administration of the
Oracle applications.
Better performance
The Tarantella Adaptive Internet Protocol ensures fast remote access,
even over low-bandwidth connections.
From the Tarantella control center, PepsiCo can
distribute, manage, and maintain these applications easily and centrally.
As a result, the company has experienced significant IT administration
and management cost savings.

Customer Testimonial
"We are very pleased with the effectiveness
of Tarantella. In addition to the extra functionality delivered
by its centralized management, our applications are much more scalable
than before. Complex deployment of applications to local and remote
users, even users in other countries, is much more effective using
Tarantella."
