Marix Technologies bases successful ASP business model on Tarantella web-enabling software

Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Marix (previously, "FreeDesk.com") is an Application Service Provider (ASP) that specializes in providing free, web-based solutions. Marix provides a service that allows access to powerful office applications via the Internet from any computer, anytime, through any supported browser. Users can either rent or buy the Marix applications after a free trial period. Marix chose Tarantella web-enabling software to replace Citrix® MetaFrameTM software. It is key to centrally managing and delivering applications via the web.

The company switched to Tarantella to enable its applications to be usable and deployable over the web.

Hot New Industry

The Application Service Provider (ASP) market is one of the hottest new industries spawned by the Internet. The ASP business model is based on the concept that it is more cost-efficient to rent a business solution, such as a suite of office applications, than it is to purchase one outright. Marix takes this concept a step further: the company also provides a "white board" collaborative tool that lets users create an instant extranet for sharing applications. The challenge Marix faced was finding a single web-enabling solution that could quickly web-enable a number of applications, running on different platforms, and then deploy them over the web.

Immediately Web-enable Several Applications

After considering solutions from a range of vendors, Marix chose Tarantella web-enabling software.

Utilizing Tarantella, Marix was able to immediately web-enable several server-based applications, such as a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation and graphics program, a webpage editor, and an email package. Tarantella allowed Marix to web-enable all of these applications without any software rewrites. Best of all, Tarantella enables the Marix system to run on a range of platforms, such as Linux®, UNIX® and Windows® NT.

Beneficial Results

Instant web-enabling of applications without a rewrite

Sharper competitive edge through increased speed and performance

Expanded customer base via multi-platform capabilities (Linux, UNIX, etc.)

Lower administration and overhead through centralized deployment and management

Building for the Future

Tarantella has also provided Marix with a clear roadmap. The company plans to bring the combination of applications delivered via Tarantella, and files delivered via PC Share, to other environments — such as major web portals. This will allow Marix to expand its offerings and deliver additional value to its users.
